History of Hockey in Powerview-Pine Falls

If you stroll west past Elm and Tamarac Streets in Powerview-Pine Falls, beyond Sonny’s Chicken House, you’ll spot the Access Arena—a towering testament to the town’s love for hockey. This rink, once a dream born in the shadow of the Manitoba Paper Company’s mill, has been the heartbeat of minor hockey for generations.
Back in the late 1920s, kids in Pine Falls chased pucks on outdoor rinks near an old dining hall, their blades carving the first chapters of a hockey story. By Christmas 1945, a new outdoor rink buzzed with young players, but the community craved more. Jerry Carey and Roy Perry rallied the Winter Club that winter, igniting a movement. With $25,000 from the paper company and mill workers pitching in a dollar a month, the town raised $40,000 by 1948. Volunteers—300 strong—poured 7,000 hours into a grand arena, opened on February 8, 1950. Its 80-by-180-foot ice became a playground for kids dreaming big.
The Paper Kings, the town’s pride, ruled the ice, even clinching the 1957 Intermediate AA Western Canada Championship. But it was the little ones—stick in hand, cheeks red from the cold—who kept the spirit alive. When fire claimed the rink in 1966, the community rebuilt, undeterred. Today’s Access Arena hosts three youth leagues, echoing with the laughter and grit of the Pineview Saints Minor Hockey Association.
From Bill Watson, who skated from these rinks to the NHL, to the countless kids who learned teamwork here, Powerview-Pine Falls is a hockey town through and through. The Pineview Saints carry that legacy forward, building skills, friendships, and community—one goal at a time.
